So I started with the air filter and carb. This is a case of just a couple of bolts that go through the side of the air filter. Then when that its off the carb is held by two bolts at the top and bottom. try not to get too stressed taking these off because yes they are awkward. That should now have you down to the manifold. I decided to just leave this on. Now time for the accelerator Cable. Easy just unscrew and dont forget the choke cable on the back, same story.
Time for the radiator and the cooling system. Best thing to do is have a large jug at the bottom of the car or a servicing tray. Take off the hose from the bottom of the radiator, may take some moving as the hose does get corroded to the outlet. Wait until the hose is empty also squeeze the pipes so the coolant flows better. Start radiator side first. Take off the top hose. remove the radiator from the hanging braces. Then you might as well take off the braces. Next job remove all hoses from the engine. You may get coolant run out but not to worry. All hoses off including the ones that connect to the heater exchange and some air hoses that would connect to the air filter and carb.
Next best thing to do is remove the wiring loom from around the engine this connects to a few things such as the coil, earthing and battery. You might as well remove all the loom because it wont be of any use to you in the future.
The next thing would be the fuel line this is simple disconnect it before it reaches the filter. Obviously empty out the fuel of the tank, luckily or not I did not have any left.
While you are at the top of th engine you will need to remove the exhaust manifold. Don't try to remove the exhaust because its stopped by the steering rack. leave it there and do it later. But its also best to remove the rest of the exhaust for later uses.
This should only leave the cables left. such as clutch, speedo, choke throttle. Start from the easy one accelerator is the red cable that would of gone to the carb. Feed the red cable back through the bulk head and take out the accelerator pedal as it wont be need for a while. Same story for the choke cable. Now get under the car on the gear box is the clutch cable just unscrew, same for the speedo cable.
While you was under there you should of noticed the gearbox cross member. take out the bolt in the middle, you will need two spanners. You should be ready for the engine to come out, have a look around just to check that i have not forgot anything.
