Removing the Engine

Now time for the engine to come out, I have removed all the wiring, pipes, exhaust and electrics.

To start with get yourself a crane that will handle the weight of the engine I used a three tonne but that was a bit dramatic. Setup the crane over the engine at about 30 - 60 cm away from the top of the engine. Bolt a chain/strap to one side off the engine using either engine sub mount or the exhaust manifolt boltsthen over the hook on the crane to the other side. Best to cross over a few times to be safe. Now crank up the crane till the chains become tight. Now undo the rubber engine mounts and under the car remove the gearbox cross member.

As you crank up the engine pull the engine towards the front of the car so that it disengages the drive shaft, also making sure the gear lever falls through the hole. Once all is out of the way it should lift up with little effort.
With the engine out of the way you should have steering rack in clear view, brake servo, and the heater exchange pipes.

Steering Rack. The best way to do this is to remove the two bolts from the back of the cross member that holds the two together. when the steering rack is free, undo the bolt on the shaft then the shaft and rubber bush should seperate from each other. This will enable you to get out the Exhaust manifold.

Brake Servo. To start go in the car and remove pin from the back of the brake pedal that joins it to the piston. Then remove a wheel and at the back of the caliper remove the bolt that connects the brake hose. Empty the brake fluid into a jar. When empty undo the pipes from the bottom of the brake servo. Now only three screws on the bulk head separate you from freedom.

Heater Exchange. Now on the bulk head just under the front windscreen is a large piece of metal that straps round the front of the car. This is held in place by bolts under the windscreen and on the bulk head. You may need a impact screwdriver as they were tough. When this is out of the way you will be able to see where the pipes connect to the bulk head. Now you can remove the pipes.

Removing the Acillaries In Engine Bay

Time has come to remove the engine but before I can proceed I need to take out all the things connected to the engine.
So I started with the air filter and carb. This is a case of just a couple of bolts that go through the side of the air filter. Then when that its off the carb is held by two bolts at the top and bottom. try not to get too stressed taking these off because yes they are awkward. That should now have you down to the manifold. I decided to just leave this on. Now time for the accelerator Cable. Easy just unscrew and dont forget the choke cable on the back, same story.

Time for the radiator and the cooling system. Best thing to do is have a large jug at the bottom of the car or a servicing tray. Take off the hose from the bottom of the radiator, may take some moving as the hose does get corroded to the outlet. Wait until the hose is empty also squeeze the pipes so the coolant flows better. Start radiator side first. Take off the top hose. remove the radiator from the hanging braces. Then you might as well take off the braces. Next job remove all hoses from the engine. You may get coolant run out but not to worry. All hoses off including the ones that connect to the heater exchange and some air hoses that would connect to the air filter and carb.

Next best thing to do is remove the wiring loom from around the engine this connects to a few things such as the coil, earthing and battery. You might as well remove all the loom because it wont be of any use to you in the future.

The next thing would be the fuel line this is simple disconnect it before it reaches the filter. Obviously empty out the fuel of the tank, luckily or not I did not have any left.

While you are at the top of th engine you will need to remove the exhaust manifold. Don't try to remove the exhaust because its stopped by the steering rack. leave it there and do it later. But its also best to remove the rest of the exhaust for later uses.

This should only leave the cables left. such as clutch, speedo, choke throttle. Start from the easy one accelerator is the red cable that would of gone to the carb. Feed the red cable back through the bulk head and take out the accelerator pedal as it wont be need for a while. Same story for the choke cable. Now get under the car on the gear box is the clutch cable just unscrew, same for the speedo cable.

While you was under there you should of noticed the gearbox cross member. take out the bolt in the middle, you will need two spanners. You should be ready for the engine to come out, have a look around just to check that i have not forgot anything.
